As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Port State Control (PSC) operations within the region, the Abuja MoU Secretariat was invited by the NIMASA Western Zone to deliver a specialized in-house training on ship vetting and inspections. The training took place from 2nd to 6th June 2025 at the Conference Room, NIMASA Western Zone Headquarters, 88 Marine Road, Apapa, and commenced daily at 10:00 a.m.
The Abuja MoU delegation participated in the training from 5th to 6th June 2025, with a focus on the use of the Abuja MoU Port State Control Manual and the Abuja MoU Information System (AMIS). The goal was to enhance the capacity of NIMASA’s Western Zone Port State Control Officers (PSCOs) in line with regional standards.
The Abuja MoU Secretariat was represented among other by two of its highly experienced technical experts:
- Engr. Richard Owolabi, Head Technical, Abuja MoU, Lagos.
- Mr. Akin Adedotun, Information System Officer, Abuja MoU, Lagos.
These experts delivered comprehensive technical sessions covering:
- Port State Control inspection protocols
- Identifying, reporting, and documenting deficiencies
- Developing corrective action plans
- Practical use of the AMIS database for data entry and reporting
The training was coordinated and supported by:
- Mrs. Gloria Adaugo Anyasodo, Zonal Coordinator, NIMASA Western Zone.
- Engr. K. Edubio, District Surveyor, Western Zone, NIMASA.
This engagement reaffirmed the Abuja MoU’s commitment to continuous capacity building and technical support for its member States and maritime authorities. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the knowledge shared and affirmed their readiness to strengthen PSC implementation in line with regional best practices.
The Abuja MoU Secretariat looks forward to further collaborations aimed at promoting maritime safety and eliminating substandard shipping in West and Central Africa.
