The Secretariat of the Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central African Region (Abuja MoU), in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation and the Cameroon Ministry of Transport, is organizing an intensive training course on the Maritime Labour Convention, (MLC, 2006). This five-day event is set to take place from 15 to 19 July 2024, at the Sawa Hotel, Douala, Cameroon.
Focus on Maritime Labour Convention, 2006
The Maritime Labour Convention, (MLC, 2006), adopted in February 2006 by governments, employers, and workers’ representatives at a special ILO International Labour Conference, is a significant international standard for the global shipping industry. Often referred to as the “seafarers’ bill of rights,” the MLC, 2006 aims to ensure decent working and living conditions for seafarers and promote quality shipping standards. This convention has become one of the Relevant Instruments in the Abuja MoU, underscoring the importance for all Port State Control officers to be proficient in its application.
Objectives of the Training
The regional training is designed to enhance the capacity of Port State Control Officers in applying and deepening vessel inspections through MLC, 2006 as amended, using Port State guidelines. The course aims to provide effective support to ensure seafarers’ decent working conditions. Participants will engage in technical sessions and practical, interactive exercises, including ship visits and demo inspections, guided by experienced international experts.
This training underscores the collective commitment to improving the welfare and rights of seafarers, ensuring that maritime operations adhere to the highest standards.
